Fleeting moments - moments that unexpectedly arise define our lived experience as artists.
Plein Air - as the act of painting outdoors - most accurately describes my primary method of working. Creating in the moment in front of the subject affords the most satisfying opportunity for inspiration and deeper understanding.
It is with great enthusiasm I find myself willing to adapt to ever changing lighting and environmental conditions - affording the opportunity to capture a subject’s essence in real time. Plants continue through their lifecycle as wildlife go about their business within a changing landscape.
My current work follows the life and surroundings of a local beaver dam which has spurred my interest in regional plants and wildlife, further shaping many visual ideas. I find myself intrigued by the challenges that nature faces in the way of seasonal changes and human impacts on habitat, further expanding on ideas with intent to bring attention to land conservation.
As an artist, what could be more thrilling than to chase this illusion that we can suspend these observed moments with paint and brush across sheets of watercolour paper!
